ĪDHD is a difficulty in directing one's attention (an executive function of the frontal lobe), not a lack of attention. The over-concentration or hyperfocus often occurs if the person finds something "very interesting and/or provide(s) instant gratification, such as computer games or online chatting. These inattentive symptoms occur dually with what has been termed "hyperfocus" by the 2019 European Consensus Statement on Adult ADHD. In ADHD, formulation and thinking can be slower than in neurotypical people (though this is not universal), and may be "long winded or tangential". People with ADHD may find organization (such as with paperwork) difficult, but they may hyperfocus on other interesting things such as art. They are often mimicked by similar conditions involving executive dysfunction or emotional dysregulation, and lack of diagnosis and treatment may lead to further co-morbidity. So called " twice exceptional" people, with high intellect and learning disabilities, may have either or both of hyperfocus and perseverative behaviours. ![]() In ADHD, it may be a coping mechanism or a symptom of emotional self-regulation. Ĭonditions associated with hyperfocus or perseveration include neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly those considered to be on the autism spectrum and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is distinguished from stereotypy (a highly repetitive idiosyncratic behaviour). In some cases, it is referred to as perseveration -an inability or impairment in switching tasks or activities (" set-shifting"), or desisting from mental or physical response repetition (gestures, words, thoughts) despite absence or cessation of a stimulus. Hyperfocus may in some cases also be symptomatic of a psychiatric condition. However, unlike hyperfocus, "flow" is often described in more positive terms, suggesting they are not two sides of the same condition under contrasting circumstance or intellect. In some circumstances, both flow and hyperfocus can be an aid to achievement, but in other circumstances, the same focus and behavior could be a liability, distracting from the task at hand. Hyperfocus may bear a relationship to the concept of flow. Psychiatrically, it is considered to be a trait of ADHD together with inattention, and it has been proposed as a trait of other conditions, such as schizophrenia, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Hyperfocus on a certain subject can cause side-tracking away from assigned or important tasks. In some individuals, various subjects or topics may also include daydreams, concepts, fiction, the imagination, and other objects of the mind. Hyperfocus is an intense form of mental concentration or visualization that focuses consciousness on a subject, topic, or task. Likewise digging a ramp under a raised bridge will not remove the floor tile. It is impossible to channel out stone that is directly under a raiseable bridge when its in the raised position. Attempting to lower a drawbridge onto such a creature (in order to atom-smash it) will cause the bridge itself to deconstruct. This weight limit is not cumulative - a bridge will still retract if a hundred goblins are standing on it, but a single rutherer accompanying those goblins will prevent the bridge from operating. However, lowering a drawbridge onto a sufficiently large creature (such as a forgotten beast) simply destroys the bridge.īridges will not operate if any one creature of size 1,200,000 is on them. Even fluids get destroyed (this is especially useful considering lack of chasms in the new version). The lowering of a drawbridge can also be used as a waste disposal for unwanted stones, refuse, goblins (dead or alive), legendary cheese makers and nobles, to name a few. ![]() Because bridges can be built along map edges and then raised to act as walls, they can be used to control where enemies spawn on the map. ![]() (If there is no floor beneath the bridge) they will fall, sometimes into something very, very bad. Smashing them to tiny bits if placed to raise facing each other, with no space in between. Using 2 bridges at opposite ends of a corridor creates a very large and simple trap by walling in enemies. This can be used to block fortress entrances/corridors. The key advantage to raising bridges is the creation of a wall when the bridge is raised. The bridge also "moves" to this position very fast, firing anything on the bridge into the air. The wall acts as if it was constructed, rendering it invulnerable to building destroyers. The resulting wall is always one z-level tall, regardless of the length of the bridge. If a bridge is set to raise when the lever is pulled, the bridge becomes a wall along the edge selected with the w a d x keys when placing the bridge. Clearly this can be used to drop your enemies to rocky/watery/fiery deaths (or anything more imaginative you can think up!). If a bridge is set to retract when the lever is pulled, the bridge essentially disappears dropping anything (friend, foe, or object) on the bridge onto whatever is underneath. This will define the color of the bridge (and possibly how fire resistant it is, although this hasn't been tested extensively). I casually referred to it as such in a 2020 article published by The Gospel Coalition. dissertation on the New England Puritans and yet I did not know that referring to the original Massachusetts Bay Colony as a “Bible Commonwealth” was questionable. As for reputable historians who specialized in New England Puritanism, Perry Miller (1905 –1963) championed the idea that Massachusetts was a “Bible Commonwealth.” To attribute the “Bible Commonwealth” label to Boot and Bahnsen, rather than Miller, is odd. Citing Joe Boot, Greg Bahnsen (1948-1995) “and others” as peddlers of this “common false narrative,” he claims that “better historians,” like George Haskins (1915-1991) put that idea “to bed.” But Haskins was a legal scholar, a professor of law, and not primarily a historian. However, Mr Cline, in his justifiable attempt to dissociate Puritanism from (that definition of) theonomy, appears to over-reach by seeking to over-turn the claim that the New England colonies (save Rhode Island) were “Bible Commonwealths” – that is, Protestant theocracies. Cline is right to conclude that Puritanism was decidedly non-theonomic. Cline mustered, Increase Mather articulated their view succinctly: “the Works of God have a voice in them, as well as his Word.” So, insofar as theonomy is a rejection of natural law, Mr. Cline demonstrates that Puritans repeatedly extolled natural law. ![]() He is correct, in his major thesis, that the claim that “Puritanism and the natural law tradition are antithetical” is “wildly ahistorical.” Mr. ![]() In this integrated series of brilliant and witty essays which he describes as “pieces,” Perry Miller invites and stimulates in the reader a new conception of his own inheritance.Timon Cline wrote recently that “theonomists” didn’t run Puritan New England. In this book, as in all his work, the author of The New England Mind: The Seventeenth Century The New England Mind: From Colony to Province and The Transcendentalists, emphasizes the need for understanding the human sources from which the American mainstream has risen. Thus left alone with America, who were they? And what were they to do? For the second generation in America discovered that their heroic parents had, in fact, been sent on a fool’s errand, the bitterest kind of all that the dream of a model society to be built in purity by the elect in the new continent was now a dream that meant nothing more to Europe. Miller’s engrossing account of what happened to the European mind when, in spite of itself, it began to become something other than European. This crucial uncertainty of the age is the starting point of Mr. But the original speaker’s underlying concern was with the fateful ambiguity in the word errand. Like so many jeremiads of its time, this sermon appeared to be addressed to the sinful and unregenerate whom God was about to destroy. The title, Errand into the Wilderness, is taken from the title of a Massachusetts election sermon of 1670. Miller makes this abundantly clear and real, and in doing so allows the reader to conclude that, whatever else America might have become, it could never have developed into a society that took itself for granted. Disguised from twentieth-century readers first by the New Testament language and thought of the Puritans and later by the complacent transcendentalist belief in the oversoul, the related problems of purpose and reason-for-being have been central to the American experience from the very beginning. They go to the roots of seventeenth-century thought and of the ever-widening and quickening flow of events since then. These questions are by no means frivolous. Miller’s lifelong purpose to answer: What was the underlying aim of the first colonists in coming to America? In what light did they see themselves? As men and women undertaking a mission that was its own cause and justification? Or did they consider themselves errand boys for a higher power which might, as is frequently the habit of authority, change its mind about the importance of their job before they had completed it?
